HFT Team wins Best collaboration Award of the World challenge Finland 2018
The United Nations World Challenge Finland is an annual challenge for teams up to three people to create a web application to make the world a more livable place. The application needs to be built around the digital globe “World Wind” which is developed by NASA and ESA. During the last few years, the event has been steadily growing with its highest number of around 40 participating teams this year.
Graduates from the Master Course Photogrammetry and Geoinformatics of the HFT have been participating for the second year in a row with their project “Smart Pollen Monitoring”. This year, they had been awarded “The 2nd Award” in the NASA World Wind challenge, and for the second year in a row “The Best Collaboration Award” given to the best-collaborated team.
The final round of this challenge took place in Helsinki, to where the best six teams were invited. The program for the final days consisted mainly of mentoring sessions from experts in different fields as well as presentations by these experts about their respective fields. These ranged from space exploration to the United Nations Technology Innovation Labs (UNTIL). The culmination of the event was held in the Nokia Experience Center where each team was given three minutes to pitch their project to the judges, members of the press and general audience.
The team this year consisted of Thunyathep (Joe) Santhanavanich, Patrick Würstle and Giuliano Baumann with Prof. Dr. Volker Coors as a mentor. The application “Smart Pollen Monitoring” monitors the pollen dispersal areas by analyzing wind direction and tree location as well as blooming data. Also, it provides a smart routing functionality suggesting the most suitable route to avoid the pollen area. The application with more detailed descriptions can be found on our homepage.
